(N.J.S. 2C:17-3)
If an individual was out walking the Boulevard or the boardwalk after a night of drinking and he or she causes damage to either township property or private property, he or she can be charged with criminal mischief. Payments of restitution for the damage as well as fines may ensue. The repercussions will depend on the value of the item that was damaged. As the value of the damage increases, the fines and charges may become more serious. In general, damage of less than $500.00 will result in a disorderly persons offense. Anything above $500.00 can be charged as a 4th degree or even 3rd degree crime.
